Your child has had Dental Treatment recommended by your Dentist or Orthodontist.
The Procedure is performed under a General Anaesthetic. It is Day Surgery and does not usually require an overnight stay.
A long-acting Anaesthetic is injected while your child is asleep. This will keep them comfortable during and after the procedure.
Small incisions may be made in the gum to expose the tooth.
Removal of the tooth may require removal of bone with a surgical drill to facilitate complete remove.
Gold Chain may be attached to unerupted teeth in order to facilitate traction for eruption by the Orthodontist.
You will receive a script for:
Pain relief
Chlorhexidine mouthwash
Dr Tan-Gore does not routinely prescribe antibiotics for Paediatric Dental extraction.
Your child will require a minimum of 1 week off from school.
Dr Tan-Gore may review you after your surgery. Otherwise, she will refer you back to the Dentist or Orthodontist for ongoing treatment
Generally, the risks for dental treatment in the Paediatric patient is low.
Nerve Injury: The risks of temporary or permanent nerve injury is low as the nerve is usually well below the level of the tooth roots
Injury to Adjacent Teeth: Dr Tan-Gore takes great care to avoid injury to the adjacent teeth. However, Paediatric Dentition is generally more susceptible to injury due to softer underlying bone.
Injury to Adjacent Hardware: Occasionally, Orthodontic brackets or wires are inadvertently dislodged during surgery. Dr Tan-Gore will account for the bracket or wire, inform the patient and guardian immediately and inform the Orthodontist so that this can be reattached in a timely manner.

Pain and swelling during recover from dental extractions varies greatly between patients. It is important that you get plenty of rest, hydration and nutrition during your recover.
DAY 0-7
Pain: Pain and swelling are common after Dental Treatments. It is important to be comfortable during the healing period by:
Taking regular pain relief. Dr Tan-Gore will provide a script and it is prudent to consider taking the prescribed pain relief even if the pain is bearable. This will ensure a good baseline of pain control. Use the stronger pain relief for periods of breakthrough pain, or especially at night to aid sleep
Oral Care: If you are unable to open your mouth because of swelling, please use the Chlorhexidine mouthwash after meals – gently swishing after meals helps to keep the area clean and prevent infection. Return to brushing teeth as soon as you are able. You may find it easier to use an infant-sized toothbrush initially.
Diet: Adequate nutrition and hydration are an essential part of recovery. Consider a soft puree diet in the initial 3-5 days. Then progress to a normal diet as you are able. Remember to keep you with fluids.
Return to School: This varies depending on your child. It is not advised for your child to return to school if they are requiring strong pain relief during the day.
DAY 7-14
Children have a great capacity for recovery and usually return to function after 1 week post dental extractions.
If a Gold Chain has been placed, you will need to return to your Orthodontist to start traction.
